St. Andrew Christmas Novena

Novena begun on the Feast of St Andrew (Nov 30th) through Christmas Eve (Dec 24th). The prayer is recited 15 times/day. It can be done all at once (as in this video) or broken up several times/day. It is a wonderful way to keep the focus on the true meaning of Christmas. God bless you!

Letter to the Editor, An Op-Ed Vignette In the not so distant future: Cathi, a Catholic, and Evan, an Evangelical, are sitting in the campus cafeteria.  Before they commence to eat, Cathi makes the Sign of the Cross; with her right hand fingertips she touches her forehead and says, “In the Name of the Father”, she moves her hand to her chest by her heart and says, “And of the Son”, then she moves her hand to her left shoulder and then to her right shoulder and says, “And of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”  They are sitting across from each other and extend their arms across the table, holding hands they bow their heads. Evan prays, “Lord, as we walk through this world may Your Love heal our hearts, may Your Grace light our minds, and may Your Mercy shelter our souls. We thank You for giving us these wonderful blessings.” and together they chime in “Amen.” Just as they start to eat, Gotham, a Goth, suddenly appears and loudly protests, “

November reminds us of giving thanks from Pilgrim Center of Hope -Catholic Evangelization Ministry in San Antonio

Pilgrim Center of Hope  -  Catholic Evangelization Ministry in San Antonio  Greetings!  November reminds us of giving thanks.  How often do we stop and give thanks?   Pope Francis recently spoke about giving thanks: “If we can realize that everything is God’s gift, how happy will our hearts be! Everything is his gift. He is our strength! … Saying ‘thank you’ is such an easy thing, and yet so hard!” Holy Family - detail of painting that hangs at St. Joseph's Church in NazarethWe have been told when people pray, their prayer is mostly one of petition and intercession; however, the prayer of “thanksgiving” is often not said.   Research has indicated that when people take time to be thankful or grateful, it can make you happier, healthier and aware of counting your blessings each day. Letter to the Editor, A THANKSGIVING Tall Tale  Mr. Hanks is a conservative and Mr. Givin is a liberal.  They live in the small border town of Riverville, Texas.  They live across the street from each other; Mr. Hanks on the South side of the street and Mr. Givin on the North side of the street.  They are neighbors but they are not the least bit neighborly.  Elections are the worst time of the year for the neighborhood.  Their front lawns are strewn with a conglomeration of campaign signs.  Mr. Hanks has all the Republican candidates’ signs and Mr. Givin has all the Democratic candidates’ signs.  As you would expect their cars are also covered with the candidates’ stickers.  Mr. Hanks drives a large, red SUV and Mr. Givin drives a small, blue hybrid.  As soon as Mr. Hanks gets home from work he sits down to watch FOX NEWS until it’s time to go to bed.  As soon as Mr. Givin gets home from work he sits down to

November 13 & 14, 2014: Running of the Silver Rose Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 2687

Image
Running of the Silver Rose This Project was started by the Columbian Squires, the youth branch of the Knights of Columbus, in 1960. Squires ran a real rose from Canada through the United States to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The project continued in subsequent years, but with a silver rose crafted by an artist in Mexico. In the 90’s the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council took over the project, and there are now 4 roses that start in Canada, travel through the United States, and arrive in Monterrey for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. The rose that will arrive in Del Rio on November 12, is the rose that travels down the west coast of the United States. November 11, 2014: Del Rio News-Herald * Letter to the Editor * Pro-Life candidates victorious

Image
Letter to the Editor, This November 4, 2014 Election showed Pro-Life candidates as overwhelmingly victorious.  Nine pro-life Senatorial candidates won their races, meaning that the Senate will have a bipartisan pro-life majority.  It is edifying to see women winning elections with a pro-life message.  It is evident that the “War on Women” mantra which portrayed opposition to abortion and contraception as an attack on women’s rights did not resonate with the vast majority of voters nationwide. Pro-Life Saira Blair, at 18 years old, became the youngest legislator in the country with her election to West Virginia’s House of Delegates. Her website stated, “My Core Personal and Political Beliefs: I’m Pro-Life, I’m Pro-Family, I’m Pro-2nd Amendment, I’m Pro-Business, I’m Pro-Jobs, I’m Pro-West Virginia.”  Pro-life Elise Stefanik from New York, won election to the United States House of Representatives, becoming at a

November 7, 2014: Del Rio News-Herald * Letter to the Editor * A Simple Story

Image
Letter to the Editor, Cathi, a Catholic and Evan an Evangelical are college students attending Southern Desert State University (SDSU).  They are taking several college classes together, among them is a science class taught by Professor Sago.  Professor Sago proudly claims to be a professed atheist.  He mocks religion in all his science classes because he teaches that science is sensible and religion is ridiculous.  Former students of Professor Sago started referring to him behind his back of course, because they were afraid of him and they needed to pass his class in order to graduate, as The Pagan Professor.  The name stuck and generations of students later still refer to him by that moniker. He loves science and hates religion.  He doesn’t believe in anything except in what his beloved science textbooks and journals say about science.  When he isn’t teaching hatred of religion, I mean, when he isn’t tea
