A Classic: The Last Cab Ride..............

Image
II arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again.  Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened.  A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters.  In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. 'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said.  I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woma

POR QUE ES NECESARIA LA ORACION! PARA MI ES POR QUE ME HE DADO CUENTA LA INSISTENCIA DE JESUS ,DE QUE NUESTRA ORACION DEBE SER CONSTANTE E INSISTENTE  Y EN TODO MOMENTO, EL DIJO PIDAN Y SE LES  DARA,NO DIJO OREN,PERO AUN PEDIR ES ORACION,O SEA TODA COMUNICACION DE PALABRA U OBRA A JESUS ES ORACION,,,SIN ESA ORACION NO HAY RESPUESTA, ES QUE ES COMO EL PAPA’ QUE CUANDO EMPIEZA A CRECER EL HIJO,SOLO LO OBSERVA Y EN LA PRIMERA CAIDA ALLI ESTA’ PARA AYUDARLO Y A MEDIDA QUE VA CRECIENDO LE DA’ MAS LIBERTAD,PERO AUN ASI DE LEJOS LO CUIDA. Letter to the Editor, First Man on Mars “Junior, stop playing your video game and come eat dinner with us,” instructs his Mother. “Okay Mom, I’ll be right there!” Junior shouts back as he always does, but somehow “I’ll be right there” never quite turns out to mean “I’ll be there right now”. Dad puts his foot down and tells Mom and Missy, “We said dinner will be served now and if he doesn’t come then he can warm it up later, but he’ll have to forego the purchase of another game until he decides to join us for dinner. Junior is standing at the kitchen door, “I’m here, I’m here.” Dad begins, “Let’s pray. Missy, please lead is in prayer.” “Okay Dad,” Missy gladly accepts the offer. Junior just rolls his eyes, because he knows what an attention-getting actress Missy is becoming, ever since she was selected to play the Blessed Virgin Mary in the annual Holy Family Church Christmas Nativity play. Finally Missy concludes her prayer with a resound

The Holy Eucharist is not just a symbol

By Father Richard W. Frank The Holy Eucharist is not just a symbol of Christ’s spiritual presence. It is not just a reminder of Christ’s self-offering in the past. No, Jesus Christ is truly present in this Sacrament. That is why we refer to the Real Presence. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “In the most blessed sacrament of the Holy Eucharist the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.” It’s a Biblical Fact Our belief in this Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist derives from the literal interpretation of the promise of Christ to give us His Body and Blood for our spiritual food and drink, as found in St. John’s Gospel, Chapter 6, and also in the four independent accounts of the fulfillment of this promise at the Last Supper (Matthew 26; Mark 14; Luke 22; 1 Corinthians 11). Eucharistic theologians explain the Real Presence by a process calle

June 14, 2016: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * June is delightfully Dad's Day!

Letter to the Editor, Delightfully Dad’s Day! It’s 2:00 p.m. and the Cristiano family has punctually arrived at Holy Family Church for Maria and Mario’s wedding scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The wedding party has been instructed to wait in the Parish Hall and the entire Cristiano family congregates there to await their cue to proceed into the church entrance. Junior is taking pictures. Everyone looks picture perfect all dressed up. Junior walks over to where Dad is standing and then suddenly blurts out, “What was yours and Mom’s wedding like?” Dad is momentarily jolted by the question and then a great big smile forms on his face. “All that day I kept telling myself, ‘I can’t be late, I can’t be late.’ Your mom would kill me if I was late. I kept checking the time all day. I didn’t want to leave the house in case something went wrong while I was out. My best man was going to come by and pick me up to go to the church at 2:00 pm. It was 2:00 pm and he di

Letter to the Editor, First presidential debate Fast forward to the future, to the first presidential debate between Bernie Sanders, Democrat and Donald Trump, Republican. How did we get to this stage of the political game?  Stranger things have happened, but let us go back and retrace the path our nation took to get to this point in history. In the Democratic Party the candidates started dropping out of the race until there was only Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. And then the unimaginable and unthinkable happened. The FBI criminal probe into former Secretary of State Clinton’s unsecured email account found that she relied on her home server and other private devices to send and store classified documents which is a security violation leading to criminal charges. It was proven that Clinton knowingly sent, received and stored classified information in an unauthorized location. She was prosecuted for unlawfully breaking the federal

Image
Letter to the Editor, Graduates: Face your fears and flourish   Criticism; no one enjoys hearing that their creative work has issues or is just plain bad. This is where pride and fear enter in. Fear and pride are the ultimate inspiration killers. Usually, when you’re afraid of making a fool of yourself, you’re preparing to do something meaningful and important. What will people think of you? What will you think of yourself? Then, you have to make a decision: to do this important and meaningful thing or not to do it. That is the question. To choose ‘not to do it’ is the easy choice and a cop out, and it has a definitive outcome: nothing. If, per chance, you make the ‘do it’ decision, there are two possible outcomes: failure or success. Facing your fears and putting aside your pride equals major life changing moments. Yes, you can be rest assured that there will be criticism and that there will be failures, and neither of

Letter to the Editor, Refugee Reality While our Refugee Relief Services delegation was working at the site that serves as a rest area for the refugees, I met a woman named Mya Zapatos. This is her story; I hope you’ll take the time to read it. I asked Zapatos to tell me about the circumstances that led to her becoming a refugee fleeing the United States. She told me that 9 month s ago her home was destroyed in one of the fierce attacks which had been raging around the city of Del Rio, Texas. The area was not safe because it continually was the site of battles between the Blue Brigade and the Red Rebels. Four weeks ago Zapatos made the difficult decision to flee her native country. She has traveled across Mexico, paid to be smuggled across the border into Guatemala, traveled by land to Ecuador, and then booked passage on a small boat to one of the Galápagos Islands. This travel by sea in a boat was the most dangerous and treacherou
