Five lessons about the way we treat people.

(Received in email) 1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady. During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the Cleaning woman several times. She was tall, Dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question Blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely, “said the professor,”In your careers, You will meet many people.  All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello...” I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her Name was Dorothy. 2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African

Reflections of Summer Spiritual Retreat from Cami Murphy

On August 1, 2015 the Little Handmaids of Our Sorrowful Mother and the Legion of Mary in Del Rio, Texas joined forces to present a "summer retreat" on  The Spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort: Coming into the Presence of Jesus with Mary.  The presenters were Fr. Antonio O. Moreno (spiritual director of the Little Handmaids and the Legion of Mary) and Cami Murphy, director of the Little Handmaids.  There were about 65 people who attended the retreat. In this email I would like to share with you a portion of  Fr. Moreno's Introduction, as well as my own reflections on it.  The retreat began with Mass, and in his homily, Fr.  Moreno spoke to us about Mary as the best spiritual director, the one who best directs us to Jesus. In his typically funny manner, he said he wanted us to have the best spiritual director, and that person was...and he extended his arm and hand in the direction of a large statue of Mary at the front of our church.  And then his arm and hand see

August 20,2015: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * My summer vacation

Image
Letter to the Editor, My Summer Vacation Missy wakes up and dashes to the kitchen where she finds her mother and father drinking coffee and declares, “I became a saint this summer!” Her mother and father look at each other quizzically, taken aback by their daughter’s remark. They look at each other, neither one knowing exactly how to respond. Missy resolutely continues her elucidation, “That’s what I’ll write about when my teacher asks the class to write about what we did during the summer.” It seems Missy has already thought this through, and knowing their daughter, there is no stopping her once she has set her mind on something, and it definitely seems like she has set her mind on this. Her mother finally inquires, “What do you mean you became a saint this summer?” “Well, Mamí, Mrs. DeLaVida, our Vacation Bible School teacher, taught us that if we loved God and we did what He told us in the Ten Commandments, then we would go

Email received from Cami Murphy on the 7 deadly sins part of her presentation during the Summer Spiritual Retreat

Email received from Cami Murphy on the 7 deadly sins These are my notes, which come partly from a website for Catholic Bible 101 , a page on the 7 deadly sins , and partly just from things I have read or been told in the past: 1.   Lust- focus on pleasure to the point that we treat other persons as objects for our pleasure. (Of course, most Catholics know that fornication, adultery, homosexual acts, and masturbation are mortal sins.)  Chastity overcomes the sin of lust. (Chastity is the giving of self according to God's will for the vocation that we are in: matrimony, priesthood, religious life, or Christian single life.) 2.   Greed- Compulsive need for more, more, more for me, me, me. The part in  Finding Nemo  of the seagulls calling, "mine, mine, mine..." reminds me of greed.  Generosity overcomes the sin of greed. 3.   Gluttony- an excess of anything (food, drink, toys television, entertainment, sex, or company).  Temperance overcomes gluttony. 4.
