Letter to the Editor, Pro-choice: Choose love Mrs. DeLaVida and Mrs. Maten are discussing the Presidential election. Maten: I know you’re pro-life, but I just can’t believe you voted for Trump. DeLaVida: I voted against Hillary. Maten: But you voted for Trump. DeLaVida: I voted for the Republican platform and for what Trump promised concerning abortion and the pro-life issues, because I believe that voting for a pro-abortion candidate is voting for the killing of an innocent life which is intrinsically evil and my conscience would not allow me to do that. Maten: Some people would say that Trump is intrinsically evil. DeLaVida: Some people would say that Hillary is intrinsically evil, but both would be wrong, because people are inherently good; it is the actions that they do or fail to do that are evil. Maten: Doesn’t that make you a one issue voter? DeLaVida: Yes, and what better issue to be for, than to be for life; I don’t

Letter to the Editor, Convergence Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the National March for Life in Washington, D.C. are three great movements that happen at the same time of year and are deeply intertwined. Each January, these three observances converge and reinforce each other and summon all Christians to work together against injustice.  On the third Monday in January, this year January 16, we observe the national holiday in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From January 18–25, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed. This year on January 27, the National March for Life recalls the tragic and infamous decision made on January 22, 1973 by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, unleashing a devastating policy of abortion on demand. Both the civil rights movement and the pro-life movement are evidence of our common Christian engagement.  Both movements se

January 10, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * The revelation of 'real news' stories

Letter to the Editor, The revelation of "real news" stories   My name Ralley Nuevas. I was a volunteer in the Team Hillary presidential campaign. It all started on November 8th, when media outlets began spreading “real news” stories. They were reporting that Hillary was losing the election. But how could that possibly be? Because I wanted Hillary to win and everybody I know also wanted her to win, so that meant that she had to win the election, right?   It was a terrible, horrible night that I will never forget, as long as I live. I was literally in shock; I couldn't believe what was happening. I spent election night at times shaking, but mostly crying.  All the "real news" stories said that Hillary Clinton was going to be the first woman president and I believed them. There was "real news" coming out of Florida and then "real news" stories started showing up about Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Letter to the Editor, Pro-life leaders celebrating New Year, new presidential administration Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony List president, who headed Donald Trump’s election campaign’s pro-life advisory committee, is celebrating the Republican control of the White House and Congress. Dannenfelser called the 2016 election “an historic moment for the pro-life movement.” She said four goals, which Candidate Trump pledged to fulfill, are now in reach: enacting the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act; establishing a permanent government-wide ban on public funding of elective abortion; defunding Planned Parenthood; and appointing pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. “We are politically poised to make the biggest executive, legislative and judicial advances for the protection of unborn children and their mothers in recent history,” she said. Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life Committee, is celebrating the election’s outcome;

January 1, 2017: New Year Blessings!

Image
A Prayer for the New Year Dear Lord, We pray that this New Year will bring us closer to You. May we take the time to get to know You. Help us to truly celebrate the gifts You have graciously given us and use them to serve You and spread Your word, May we also see and love you in all the people we meet, so that in turn, they can see You in us. We know that all human relations take time if they are to grow and deepen. This is also true of our relations with You, the Father and the Holy Spirit, which must grow over the course of our lives. In this New Year, let us realise that every action of ours no matter how great or small, enables us to be in touch with You. Let us accept You in our lives as, Truth, to be spoken Life, to be lived Love, to be shared Joy, to be given Peace, to be spread and as Sacrifice, to be offered among our relatives, friends, neighbours and all people. Amen.
