The presence of Opus Dei in America:  It all started with Father Joseph Múzquiz What is Holiness? "There are people that enter into our lives sent by the Holy Spirit and make a great impact. In my life that was Father Joseph. He just opened up the way that I was to follow.” Cardinal Sean O’Malley , the archbishop of Boston, said  Father Joseph  showed that "the virtue of everyday heroism can be achieved by all people of good faith.” Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles  called Father Joseph "a true evangelist of our times.” We are speaking of  Father Joseph Muzquiz , the  Spanish priest  who in the year 1949 brought Opus Dei to the United States . Pope Francis: Promote Religious Liberty

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that

The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching. Take Action and Support Religious Liberty Pope Francis has observed that "religion [cannot] be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life."  Evangelii Gaudium . no. 183. In insisting that our liberties as Americans be respected, Pope Benedict XVI said that this work belongs to "an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity endowed with a strong critical sense vis-à-vis th

San Antonio, Miami Archbishops make good-natured gamble on Spurs-Heat rematch

Image
Archbishop Gustavo García‐Siller has accepted a friendly wager with Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami over the Spurs-Heat rematch for the 2014 NBA Finals. According to Archdiocese Gustavo's communications office, he has wagered a donation to one of the Archbishop of Miami’s food banks while Archbishop Wenski is wagering key lime pie, oranges and grapefruits, a cafeteria coffee maker and Cuban coffee, and a donation to the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s Catholic Charities.   Last year, Archbishop Gustavo donated Texas barbecue and fajitas and said he is likely to donate the same "in the unlikely event the Spurs were to lose to the Heat."    “I’m confident that I will be enjoying the sweet taste of victory when the Spurs are crowned champions," Archbishop Gustavo said. "This will be a great rematch and I thank Archbishop Thomas Wenski in advance for his generosity and good taste. Go Spurs Go!”

Image
Dear little handmaids and friends, Little Handmaids of Our Sorrowful Mother will be showing a series of DVD's, with discussion after each, on the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary, according to St. Louis de Montfort.  This is to give us a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Consecration and some counsel on how to prepare well for making (or renewing) it.  Fr. Hugh Gillespie of Montfort Missionaries is the speaker on the videos. He is a very interesting speaker and has deep insight into the meaning of the Consecration.  If you want to understand how Mary leads us to Jesus, and Jesus leads us to Mary, you will want to see these videos. The DVD's and discussions will be on the 4th Tuesday of June, July, and August, from 6:00 until 7:30 at St. Joseph in CCD Room 11, on the following dates: Tuesday, June 24, 2014 Tuesday, July 22, 2014 Tuesday, August 26, 2014 I will be sending out notices closer to the dates. Spread the Word: Get Your News from EWTN

Early July is often when we gather with our friends and family to celebrate our country's Independence Day.  However, one of our most cherished freedoms, our freedom of religion, is in danger of being compromised by a proposed health care law that would force many Catholic business owners to fund contraceptives and abortion inducing drugs.  As the secular media likes to put their own spin on things, we'd like your help letting other Catholics know about Fortnight for Freedom and our two news programs: "EWTN News Nightly" and "The World Over".                    Closing Mass for Fortnight for Freedom:    At 11:30 p.m. CT on July 4 ,  Cardinal Donald Wuerl   will conclude the two-week Fortnight for Freedom event with a closing Mass.   Archbishop Kurtz of Louisville  has been selected as the homilist for this day and  reminds us to remember our cherished freedoms on the anniversary of our country's independence.

Powerful Pro-Life Father’s Day Video

This commercial from Dove that powerfully captures the irreplaceable value of fathers is just the kind of unintentionally pro-life video that will move hearts this week as we prepare to honor Dads.  This one even comes with a scene featuring a daughter showing her Father a picture of an ultrasound of her unborn baby. See for yourself and… thank you Dads!

Maya Angelou: The Decision That Changed My Life: Keeping My Baby

Maya Angelou: The Decision That Changed My Life: Keeping My Baby by Steven Ertelt | LifeNews.com | 5/28/14 3:43 PM Writer and poet Maya Angelou died this morning, according to a family statement. She was found by her caregiver and was reportedly been in poor health and had canceled recent scheduled appearances. Harold Augenbraum, from the National Book Foundation, said that Angelou’s “legacy is one that all writers and readers across the world can admire and aspire to.” But while most people are aware of her professional work, they don’t know Angelou’s personal background as well. Angelou had one son Guy, whose birth was described in her first autobiography, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren. She became pregnant as a teenager and could have sought an illegal abortion but, instead, decided to keep her baby. In an essay that originally appeared in Family Circle magazine, Angelou called that the best decision of her life. That essay appears below: “When
