Letter to the Editor, Hondo iconic road sign threatened Mr. Cristiano: Did you hear the Freedom From Religion Foundation wants Hondo to remove its famous sign on Highway 90, the one that reads: “This is God’s country; please don’t drive through it like hell.” Mrs. Cristiano: Really! I’ve always loved reading that road sign out loud, ever since I was a little girl.  If I was awake when we passed through Hondo, I was always on the lookout for that sign as we drove by, so I could have the pleasure of reading it. If I was somehow distracted my Dad would always remind me that the sign was up ahead so that I would be sure not to miss it. And when I was going to college in San Antonio all my friends knew that I just had to read it out loud and they would always make fun of me for doing that. And you know I’ve kept up that tradition and now Missy and Junior read it out loud along with me whenever we drive through Hondo. Mr. Cristiano: Well now they want to

Letter to the e-Edition Editor, Domestic tranquility shattered by e-Companion The wife sees her husband with his e-Companion and the wine glass slips out of her hand as she stands there in shock. The red wine splatters all over the newly installed white carpet with Scotch guard so that the wine rises up into droplets as the blood coursing through her bulging veins. She grabs her throbbing heart and her face exudes a look of terror. She never in her wildest dreams thought that he would do this to her, she never imagined he would bring his e-Companion into their home. He has eaten of the forbidden apple. The look on the love of his life makes him recoil. His wife excitedly exclaims: “You’re a traitor, that’s what you are!” He sheepishly inquires: “What did I do now?” His wife exasperatingly extols: “You betrayed the cause!” He is baffled and confused: “Exactly what cause did I betray?” His wife dramatically points to his

July 5, 2016: Nuns continue to influence healthcare *Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Nuns continue to influence healthcare

Image
Letter to the Editor, Nuns continue to influence US healthcare The Supreme Court made a unanimous decision in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor. This case challenged the Affordable Care Act’s Health and Human Services mandate from requiring religiously affiliated non-profit groups, including the Little Sisters of the Poor, who object to having to provide “abortifacients and contraceptives” to their employees. The fact that a group of nuns went all the way to the Supreme Court over an issue involving healthcare demonstrates how much of our healthcare system we continue to owe to Catholic Sisters! Catholic nuns in the U. S. have been rightly called the first feminists. In the 19th century in a country and culture where most women followed the orders of a father or husband, these women were planning, building and providing employment in over eight hundred hospitals and ten thousand schools, colleges and universities. In 1871, St
