Letter to the Editor, Ode to a school desk It’s back to school again; the classrooms await a new crop of students. Each year every classroom gets thoroughly cleaned for a new set of students to begin their school year chalk full of adventures. Each classroom shines bright, ready to hold a classroom full of students and their teachers, each with their own unique and distinctive personality. Every year holds the prospect that this will be the year that something amazing will happen. The anticipation is palpable. The questions swirling all summer long: What will my teacher be like? What will the students be like? What will I be like? Will my teacher like me? Will the students like me? Will I like my teacher? Will I like the students? Questions that only time will tell how they will be answered. Each year is a new beginning. The slate is clean, new memories will be written. Each desk awaits a new student to occupy their place for a sch

San Antonio, Texas is in Top 10 Catholic Cities, by Gretchen R. Crowe in Our Sunday Visitor OSV Newsweekly

Image
San Antonio According to the Texas State Historical Association, the Catholic Church has been part of Texas history since 1528. The Catholic history and culture is so prevalent that the San Antonio Missions are considered a National Historical Park, which preserves four out of the five Spanish frontier missions in San Antonio. These locations were established to spread the Catholic Faith to Native Americans in early American history. The most popular, Mission San Antonio, was established in 1718 by Father Antonio Olivares and was later converted to the “Alamo,” a military fort that was sieged in 1836 (“Remember the Alamo!”). Visitors can take in the entire experience by driving, biking or walking down a 10-mile Mission Trail. One of the most striking structures in San Antonio — and certainly the most historic — is the San Fernando Cathedral. Founded in 1731, it’s the “oldest, continuously functioning religious community in the state of Texas,” according to its website.

August 14, 2018: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letters to the Editor * Wimpy, whiny, 'we-porters'

Letter to the Editor, Wimpy, whiny “we-porters” They are supposed to be reporters not porters, gatekeepers keeping us out from learning what is really going on and only telling us what they want us to know, only their side of the story, only their take, only what’s on their agenda. News flash, it’s not all about the reporters, it should be all about those they are reporting about. Next news flash, reporters are not the news; reporters should only report the news. Lately the news has been all about them.  If people don’t like them, they get their feelings hurt.  They are the center of their universe and they want the public to adulate and applaud them. Silly people selling lies are what the newscasters have become. Fellow journalists are calling out the clowns to stop drawing attention to their antics. This is for Jim Acosta of CNN who said he felt sad because he was heckled. Wah, wah, wah. Poor Jim Acosta. August 8, 2018: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Storytelling time

Image
Letter to the Editor, It’s storytelling time again But I hate to inform you, unfortunately there’s no story to tell. The pit is empty; well the only pit that is empty is the pit of my stomach. The ink well has run dry, well there are no more ink wells to run dry, since I do not use pen and ink to write but tap my fingers on the keys of the computer keyboard;  letters and words magically appear on the screen in front of me. Oh, the marvels of technology! Oh, the wonder of it all! There is nothing new under the sun, well the sun has not come out yet, it is still dark outside and the early morning light of dawn is still some time away. There is no news to tell, no stories to share, no information to impart. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Oh no, but wait, this can’t be true! I’ll find something to write about, there must be something. Just like I feed my stomach, I’ll feed my mind. Just like I’m trying to eat healthier and stay away from junk food; I’ll feed my
