Despite the fact that Barrera has had to live his life adapting to limited activity due to his injuries, he is grateful for his life and his family.

"I have to say it was very hard dealing with my new physical state when I lost my hand and arm. I was upset with God and couldn't understand why it happened to me," said Barrera.

"Now, I have learned that God had a purpose for me and that I have become what I am today because of everything I have been through. I would love to have hands and do things I cannot do, but I have accepted the way I am and love what I am doing for our disabled veterans."
