The End of an Era

Last week the convent at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish was demolished.

The walls came tumbling down.

The edifice was completely wiped off the face of the earth.

All that is left are the precious memories of another time, another place and another lifetime.

Gone is the end of an era.

By-gone days of yesteryear are but memories we hold in our hearts, minds and souls.

As members of The Legion of Mary, The Nativity of Mary Praesidium we reminisced fondly about the thoughts that floated in our memories and that we held close to our hearts about the convent.

We remembered that when we first started as The Nativity of Mary Praesidium we held our weekly meetings at the convent.

We remembered the sisters who lived in the convent and who taught at Our Lady of Guadalupe School.

We remembered the dignity and decorum of the convent.

We remembered the shiny, glossy, highly polished hardwood floors.

We remembered the cleanliness and the calmness that existed.

We remembered the simplicity and the smell of holiness that permeated the surroundings.

There is much to be remembered and there is much that has been forgotten, forever lost in the times past, vaguely to be remembered and virtually only to be relived in times like these; when the sister’s residence no longer exists.

The sisters left and it has never been the same without them.

The convent was vacant and the soul of the church community was incomplete.

The sisters teaching and praying and doing what they do best, bringing people to God, bringing people to faith, hope and love.

The space is empty now, but it had been empty for a long time now, the building was there but it was merely an empty shell, a hollow dwelling.

The sisters came and built a convent and a school.

The sisters left, the convent has been demolished, the school building still stands for now.

The school now houses the parish office, the priest’s offices and the CCD classrooms.

Good bye convent, thank you for once being there, we miss you very much.

Thank you for all the memories.
