Image
Letter to the Editor, The Real Housewives of Riverville Buena-Vista Golden and Cienegas Dorado, friends since high school, affectionately greet each other at Place of the Sun Mall.  Hi-hi! Kiss-kiss! Hug-hug! Cienegas: How have you been? You look faaaaabulous! Buena-Vista: I’m doing great! You look marvelous! Cienegas: It’s summer and it’s just sooooo hot! Buena-Vista: Remember what we used to say when we were poor and didn’t have an air conditioner, ‘How hot is it?’ Cienegas: ‘It’s as hooooot as jalapeños!’  Both Buena-Vista and Cienegas boisterously burst laughing out loud, so loud that passersby turn and stare.  But they are oblivious to the stares and just think that everyone is obviously looking at them because they are both so rich and gorgeous. Buena-Vista: Have you been to the new cosmetics store, Selosa? Cienegas: Of course! Don’t be silly, I was there on opening day, I just looove it! Buena-Vista: I do all my shoppi...

July 12, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Playing the waiting game

Image
Letter to the Editor, Playing the waiting game This was written while sitting in the doctor’s waiting room . . . A lot of our time is spent waiting. We wait for the traffic light to turn green. We wait for phone calls, emails, texts and tweets. We wait to go to the bathroom because we are doing something important. We wait in waiting rooms. We wait until the commercial comes on to get up and leave the room. We wait on the waiter or waitress to come take our order. We wait in lines of people and in lines of cars. We wait on hold on the phone playing music with static and screeching sounds. We wait for the desktop computer to start up. We wait for a website to load onto the screen. We wait for holidays and before we know it they’ve come and gone. We wait for the plumber and the electrician. We wait for a special package to be delivered. When we are young we can’t wait until it’s our next birthday and when we are older we can’t believe it’s a...

July 7, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * The culture's "new clothes"

Image
Letter to the Editor, The culture’s “new clothes” Today’s culture is so fond of its “new clothes”. Every day “delusionists” come into the culture.  They spin and weave “new clothes” made of this special, unique cloth that has a way of becoming invisible to anyone who is unusually ignorant. Everyone in the culture wants to wear these refined “new clothes” because everyone can tell the wise from the fools when they are wearing these “new clothes”. The culture pays these “delusionists” large sums of money to spin and weave these “new clothes”. The culture knows about the cloth's peculiar power, and all are eager to find out what idiots other people are. Some people see the “delusionists” pretending to work away at their empty looms, but they don’t say anything or else they will be considered fools. All they say is, "It's beautiful! It's enchanting!" Everyone in the culture condescends to take their clothes off an...

July 4, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Drain the swamp

Image
Letter to the Editor, Drain the Swamp Swamps   are areas teeming with animal life; some animals live in the low-oxygen water like the Spendthrift Shrimp, some animals live at the surface of the water like the Corrupt Crocodile, some animals live above the water like the Wasteful Woodpecker, and other animals live in the spongy areas of land surrounding the swamp like the Red Wolf. During the last election the populace of this great and glorious land voted to send the Red Wolves to the Washington, D.C. Swamp to devour and destroy the Spendthrift Shrimps, the Corrupt Crocodiles and the Wasteful Woodpeckers. The three branches of once beautiful, free flowing streams; the Executive Branch of the President and Administration Officers, the Legislative Branch of the   Senate   and   House of Representatives   and the Judicial Branch of the   Supreme Court   and lower Courts, had clogged up and caused the swamp to form a breedi...

July 2, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Summer time is also church time by Father Henry Clay Hunt III

Image
Summer time is also church time Dear People of Del Rio,  I hope that you are enjoying the summer of 2017.  It is unbelievable that June has already passed and the summer days are escaping us.  I have come to observe that in our parish of St. Joseph, and I suspect that it is similar in other church communities, that participation in services on Sundays decreases notably in the summer days.  This is absolutely reprobate and unacceptable to the Lord.  We do not take a vacation from the Lord; our worship to God does not follow the academic calendar and then we abandon the ways of the Lord.  This is true for those who are Catholic as well as any protestant or evangelical church.  Anyone who believes in Christ is bound to keep holy the Lord’s Day.  For Catholics, that means to go to Holy Mass every Sunday.  For anyone else who claims to be Christian, that means to go to church every Sunday.  Jes...
