Issues for Catholic Voters

Image
Access: Catholic Advocate Catholics constitute at least 25 percent of voters in national elections. By their votes, these millions of Catholics have the power to make our country a better nation, more welcoming to life, more supportive of families, and more effective in its programs to help the poor and marginalized. Pope John Paul II and, more recently, Pope Benedict XVI and the United States bishops have called on Catholics to renew their participation in American political life. That participation means, above all, taking the moral and social principles of the Catholic Faith into the voting booth. Catholics should be guided by a few basic principles when considering their participation in politics. Catholics are obliged to participate in politics by voting. Their legislators are elected to serve and protect the common good, human dignity, and rights of human persons. As voters, they should have a clear understanding of the principles of Catholic moral and social teaching, and t

Pope Benedict Encourages Laity

Image
Access: Catholics Called to Witness   In an address to the U.S. bishops on January 19th, 2012, Pope Benedict emphasized the importance of the laity in the protection of religious liberty:     "[I]t is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church's public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres... Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion...     "Here once more we see the need for an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity endowed with a strong critical sense vis-à-vis the dominant culture and with the courage to counter a reductive secularism which would delegitimize the Church's participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society."   We have work to do!   Sin

Love is the Answer blog

(Received in email) Dear Friends and Family, This is a link to a blog that I started back in May, to write my reflections , and post others' reflections, on the gift of our special children. I plan on beginning to post on it often, because I realize that it is a powerful therapy for me, and I hope it will be healing and enlightening to others. If anyone else would like to share their reflections on this topic, I would welcome them, and would post any encouraging, uplifting, enlightening reflections that you send. The writing can be very simple. It's not the sophistication of the writing that enlightens or heals. It is the faith, hope, and love that it springs from. May God give us ears to hear all that He wants to teach us through our special children! The role of the Church in the Olympics

Image
The Games, says the Olympic Charter, seek “a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.” This is “Olympism,” a movement which, the Charter adds, seeks “the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” The founder of the modern Games was a Jesuit-educated French aristocrat and school reformer, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who saw sport as a means of reviving his country’s prowess after defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Impressed by his visits to English public schools, which showed, he wrote, how “organized sport can create moral and social strength,” he tried without success to persuade French education to incorporate more sport. That failure led to a new idea: a festival of international athleticism modelled on the competition held every four years in the ancient Greek city of Olympia

July 26, 2012: Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne

Image
Prayer to St. Anne and St. Joachim Great and glorious patriarch, St Joachim, and good St Anne, what joy is mine when I consider that you were chosen among all God's holy ones to assist in the fulfillment of the mysteries of God, and to enrich our earth with the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. By this singular privilege, you have become most powerful with both the Mother and her Son, so as to be able to obtain for us the graces that are needful to us. With great confidence I have recourse to your mighty protection, and I commend to you all my needs, both spiritual and temporal, and those of my family. Especially do I entrust to your keeping the particular favor that I desire and look for from your intercession. (Mention your petition.) And since you were a perfect pattern of the interior life, obtain for me the grace to pray earnestly, and never to set m heart on the passing goods of this life. Give me a lively and enduring love for Jesus and Mary. Obtain for m

Prayer for water

Image
Heavenly Father, Almighty God, Lord God, Most High. As I am using water to wash myself, to drink and to live; I want to thank you for this most precious gift. I bless water in your Holy Name and I ask you to bless it once more, so that we may continue to enjoy this gift. You sanctified water even at the beginning of creation as Your Spirit hovered above the waters. You sanctified water in such way, that we learned in the Holy Scriptures that several times you miraculously washed lepers clean, and then you sanctified water in the person of Your Son Jesus Christ as He was baptized with water in the Jordan river. We become sanctified by baptism with water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Water in indispensable to life, it has a great similarity to Your Spirit. In You we live, we move and have our being. We would die without you. In the same way in water we live, we move and have our being. Without water we would die. Your spirit cleanses our s

Denver prelates offer consolation in wake of Aurora shootings

DENVER (Catholic News Service - CNS) -- Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver and his auxiliary, Bishop James D. Conley, offered prayers and support to the victims, survivors and the community after a gunman killed at least a dozen people and wounded dozens more during a July 20 midnight screening of the movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora. "For those who were killed, our hope is the tender mercy of our God," the bishops said in a joint statement. "'Neither death nor life,' reflected St. Paul, 'can separate us from the love of God.' “For those who were wounded -- physically, emotionally and spiritually -- our hope is in their recovery and renewal. To them we offer our prayers, our ears to listen, and our hearts to love. The road to recovery may be long, but in hope we are granted the gift of new life." Archbishop Aquila and Bishop Conley also prayed for the shooter. "We hope also for the perpetrator of
