Communion of Saints

November 1 is Solemnity of All Saints. God’s family includes all members of the Church, on earth, in heaven, and in purgatory. Since Jesus has only one body, and since death has no power to separate us from Christ, those who are in heaven or who, before entering heaven, are being purified in purgatory by God’s love are still part of the Body of Christ. Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to "love your neighbor as yourself". Those in heaven love us more intensely than they ever could have loved us while they were here on earth. They pray for us constantly, and their prayers are powerful. One of the most important activities is prayer. Without it there can be no true spiritual life. Through personal prayer and the communal prayer of the Church, especially the Mass, we worship and praise God, we express sorrow for our sins, and we intercede on behalf of others. Through prayer we grow in our relationship with Christ and with members of God’s family. ...

Redeeming Halloween

Hallow is the same word for holy that is in the Lord’s Prayer, and e’en is a contraction of evening. The word Halloween is a shortened form of All Hallows Eve. All Hallows Eve was originally one holy evening service for two feasts celebrated by the Church: All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2. All Saints Days honors the doctrine of the communion of saints. All Souls Day commemorates all the faithful departed.   We need to use discernment to separate the various sites, sounds, signs and symbols, those used purely for enjoyment and good natured fun and those that are deliberately diabolical and evil. We can create fond family-time memories with our God-given creative, joyful, fun-filled, and humorous endowments. Let’s be vigilant. We need to protect our children from very real dangers, to carefully select the costumes that are not contrary to and contradict our faith filled relationship with God, and choose carefully if and where children w...

Invitation to Membership

If God has placed it in your heart, a great love for His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a great devotion to the Most Holy Rosary, please pray about becoming an active or auxiliary member of THE LEGION OF MARY. Active members perform weekly apostolic work by bringing the faith to others through various ministries and activities. Auxiliary members pray the Rosary and the Legion of Mary prayers every day. There are presently three (3) active praesidia or groups, two (2) are in Spanish and one (1) is in English. Please consider the possibility that Almighty God and the Blessed Virgin Mary are calling you right now to join THE LEGION OF MARY. As was the motto of the late great Pope John Paul II, “Do not be afraid”. We are all weak, frail, limited human beings, the only difference is that we asked God for the courage, strength, fortitude and perseverance to say “YES” and miraculously God has given us the graces to do His work and live His will. Visitors are always ...

The Rosary of the Virgin Mary

John Paul II wrote in his Apostolic Letter, "The Rosary of the Virgin Mary", that in the Rosary we learn Christ from Mary. In the school of Mary, we have the example of her "pilgrimage of faith". The "scenes of the Rosary" reflect Mary's first encounter with Jesus at the Annunciation, her standing at the foot of the Cross, her openness with the Church at Pentecost to the gift of the Holy Spirit, and in her final destination to Heaven through her Assumption. The Rosary becomes the means of our being conformed to Christ with Mary. Our entire perfection consists in being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus Christ. The most perfect of all devotions is undoubtedly that which conforms, unites and consecrates us most perfectly to Jesus Christ. Since Mary is of all creatures the one most conformed to Jesus Christ, it follows that among all devotions that which most consecrates and conforms a soul to our Lord is devotion to Mary, his Ho...

The Legion of Mary, The Nativity of Mary Praesidium, wishes to thank Father Jaime Renteria, Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for publishing the following in the October 4, 2009 Parish Bulletin. Please pray for us that we continue our spiritual work through Mary to Jesus, so that the Heart, Mind and Soul of Jesus may heal hearts, enlighten minds and save souls.

Human Life

A living human being is a human life. Any definition of a human being which does not include preborn babies is biological nonsense. There is no religious creed which states: The life of a human being starts at fertilization, when the father's sperm unites with the mother's egg. This observation would only be found in biology textbooks. The reason is simple. This is not a matter of faith; it is a scientific fact. Is our knowledge of eggs and sperm and fertilization based on the Bible? Of course not! These facts were verified by scientific research many centuries after the Bible was written. It is a biological fact that the life of a human being begins at conception. Calling this a religious belief is calling biology a religion. Religion and morality do not determine the scientific reality of when a human being physically exists. Religion and morality do, have a great deal to say about how, given their physical existence, human beings should be treated. ...
