Socialism stinks by Marian Casillas, Ed.D.

 

 

Socialism is totally incompatible with America’s Constitution and our traditional heritage of liberty. Unfortunately, in these turbulent, trying times due to the global pandemic economic crisis, socialism is being espoused and extended as a solution by left-wing politicians at a time when America cannot afford the steep costs that socialism imposes on society.

Socialism undermines faith and religious liberty, it is the enemy of economic freedom and opportunity, it undermines responsibility and encourages dependence, it destroys prosperity and brings misery wherever it is tried, and once imposed, socialism is almost impossible to undo.

For decades, American schools have failed to provide young Americans with a solid grounding in American civics, the study of American history, government, and economics. This has contributed to the attraction so many young people today feel toward socialism.  America’s colleges and universities are now hotbeds of progressive and “politically correct” ideology, and are increasingly denying free speech rights, and the right to assemble in a peaceful and orderly manner to students and others who hold traditional conservative viewpoints.

The news media is increasingly biased towards left-wing ideology and Democratic politicians, including those who are self-proclaimed socialists, and increasingly aligned against policymakers who challenge ideas that would dramatically expand government control of not only the economy but of all sectors of society.

Recent polling suggests a large percentage of young Americans would prefer living in a socialist country. According to some analysts the word ‘socialism’ no longer carries the same derogatory stigma that it once did in the past, now that it has been resurrected and glorified by celebrity politicians like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  

As the saying goes "where the angels fear to tread, fools rush into". It's unfortunate that while people living in socialist countries are deserting those countries to take refuge in America, uninformed Americans are clamoring for socialism. May God save us. 

Citizens who were taught American history, who understand the principles and meaning of the Constitution, and who are proud of our nation’s great heritage of liberty, will not fall prey to the fantasy of socialism.

It is imperative that all future generations and future citizens be well grounded in American civics so they can continue to breathe the fresh air of freedom and reject the foul stench of socialism.
