Barrio San Felipe's USF Organization Seeks

Official City Permission for Second Memorial

DEL RIO- United San Felipe (USF), a non-profit organization that honored the famous barrio with an arch that proclaims the name of the barrio where the city of Del Rio was born, is now planning a war memorial to honor its sons and daughters who experienced military service. USF Secretary Anna Arredondo Chapman, stated that if constructed, the memorial will honor both those who made the supreme sacrifice and those who returned safely home.

"We've been talking to area residents and they are in favor of the memorial being in the San Felipe Barrio and that USF is taking the lead," said Ms Chapman. "Last week we went before the Mayor and the Del Rio City Council to begin the necessary procedures for permission to initiate our project."

USF was recently credited with providing more than 10,000 face masks for Mexican, Native American, Texas citizens as well as hundreds of   California homeless after they contacted both private mask makers and manufacturers of the face coverings. The Big Tex flag and banner manufacturing company of New Braunfels assisted USF in providing USF with more than half of the masks.

"Last week, while in Texas for a family funeral, I was able to personally thank the Big Tex Company," said USF co-founder, Andy Porras. "Chris (?), of the Big Tex Company even promised us additional masks."

Continuing with contributing to the San Felipe Barrio's historic place in both U.S. and Texas History, the USF membership first effort, its arch, is fast becoming one of the city's most photographed icon.

"During the winter snowstorm, Facebook and Google featured many photos of the snow decorated arch with the Plaza in the background," said Porras. "We received requests for additional photos of the arch."

Both Chapman and Porras feel that their monument to their neighborhood's s/heroes will get the green-light from the City Fathers. Once that happens, USF will begin their fund-raising.

"USF has a good track record thus far," said Chapman. "We're about to close our Arch Bench sales that will compliment the Arch with three small memorial benches around each column."

Those wishing additional information regarding the memorial or wishing to make a donation may contact Ms Arredondo at 830-719-1948 or Porras at 916-716-2627.
