Jesus
Alone
“For You alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
With the Holy Spirit,
In the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
Holy Mother Church
calls us at Mass to proclaim the glory of Jesus Christ in these beautiful words
from the Gloria, which are, of course, meant to be prayed in a spirit of
Adoration. They are words that come directly from Scripture. In Luke 1, in the
account of the Angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she would be the Mother of
the Son of God:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you shall call His name Jesus.
He
will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High…
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be
called holy, the Son of God.”
This
is the truth about Jesus Christ, who is fully Present to us at every Mass. The
Holy One, the Lord, the Most High, Jesus Christ is also Present in our hearts
if we welcome Him in.
Matthew 28:20- “…lo, I am with you always, to the close
of the age.”
In
last week’s homily, my pastor spoke about the disciples on the road to Emmaus,
who recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Then Father in his homily
asked the question: “Do we fail to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the
bread?”
Recently
in prayer an image came to me in which I entered a room where a party was
taking place. Many people were standing around talking, and in one corner of
the room was Jesus, sitting in a chair, totally ignored.
What
a lonely throne, on which the Holy One sits alone! The Lord, who came to earth
and was conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin, in order to bring His love
and salvation to us, in order to die for us! The Most High, who is worthy of
constant worship, but is so much of the time ignored!
When
I returned to the Church in 1992 I had a dream that very much reminds me of the
prayer image. It took place in a beautiful church, made completely of black
marble. It was at the end of Mass, and a lot of people were standing around
chatting, as if they were at a cocktail party, so casually. I was down on my
hands and knees, cleaning the black marble
floor.
That
image and that dream remind me of my feelings at the end of each Sunday Mass
that I attend, when people immediately begin to loudly chat with each other, as
if the Lord is no longer Present. I feel sad. Have we forgotten that the Lord
is Present, or have we never come to an awareness of His Presence?
When He was at table with them, He took the bread and
blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and
they recognized Him; and He vanished out of their sight. They said to each
other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road,
while He opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:30-32)
May
our hearts burn within us at every Mass, as the priest or deacon, in the light
of the Holy Spirit, opens to us the Scriptures! May we recognize Jesus--- the
Holy One, the Lord, the Most High-- in the breaking of the bread!
Amen.
