Letter to the Editor, Conversation between a cleaning lady and a celebrity Valentina Brillante: Good morning Mrs. Streep. Meryl Streep: Good morning Valentina, please call me Meryl. I keep telling you every time you come to clean my house to call me by my first name because we are all equal. Valentina: Yes, Mrs. Meryl, as you wish. Meryl: Not Mrs. Meryl, just Meryl! You can call me just by my first name. Valentina: Yes, ma’am. Meryl: Very good, now we can talk for a few minutes before you start cleaning my house. How have you been? Valentina: Well, to tell you the truth I am very happy President Trump has issued a temporary ban that affects seven countries of concern. Meryl: But Valentina, you’re an immigrant! How could you possibly be for a ban that is against your people? Valentina: Well, Meryl, for your information I am not an immigrant, I was born in the United States and I want to live in a country that is safe and secure and...

Letter to the Editor, Baby boys and baby girls   When mom and dad see their baby's ultrasound for the very first time and the primary healthcare worker says, “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!”There is serious doubt that they will vigorously protest and virulently reply, “What a most ancient and antiquated concept! I don’t believe babies are born with a specific sex. Let’s not rush into things. Let’s give our child a few years to decide to self-identify as male, female, neither or both, whatever is their chosen preference.”  Obviously not. And in the days before ultrasounds, when the doctor told mom and dad, "It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” For certain mom and dad didn’t say, “Not so fast doctor, let's not be so quick to jump to such rash judgments! The plumbing may be male or it may be female but we have no idea how our child will identify themselves later on in life. And we cannot justifiably label our baby with one specific sex. It’s their choice....

February 21, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Deplorables are not dispensable and disposable

Image
Letter to the Editor, Deplorables are not dispensable and disposable My name is C.L. Fish.  This is my depressing and distressing, sad and sorry story. First they legalized abortion, and I said that’s fine with me because I’ve already been born and it doesn’t bother me if they want to kill their babies. Then they legalized assisted-suicide, and I said that’s fine with me because I’ll never want to kill myself and it doesn’t bother me if other people want to kill themselves. Then they legalized euthanasia, and I said that’s fine with me because I’ll never want to end my life and it doesn’t bother me if other people want to end their life. Then they said that I was a deplorable who was dispensable and disposable, and I said that’s not fine with me because I don’t think I’m a deplorable who’s dispensable and disposable; and it very much bothers me that they want to dispense with me and dispose of me. So I did everything I could so t...

February 19, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Presidents' Day

Letter to the Editor, February 20: Presidents Day God and religion have been important to U.S. Presidents throughout American History. Presidents Day is a great opportunity to remember that in America, God is and has always been foundational to this country and to our system of liberty. Past Presidents have rightfully recognized God and religion. God and religion have been of substantial importance to this country’s most revered and highly respected presidents as evidenced by the following notable quotes from Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan as each focused on the fundamental role that God and religion play in American rights and government. The belief that our rights come from God and that religion plays a prominent part in our nation’s public life is not partisan or sectarian; rather it is the uniquely American experience. George Washington: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to politic...

February 11, 2017: Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

Image
PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES   Oh ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comforter of the Afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings.  Look upon me with mercy.  When you appeared in the grotto of Lourdes, you made it a privileged sanctuary where you dispense your favors, and where many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession.  My loving Mother, obtain my request.  I will try to imitate your virtues so that I may one day share your company and bless you in eternity. Amen.

January 31, 2017: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Pro-life wins!

Image
Letter to the Editor, Pro-life wins! The pro-life movement is bristling with growth, strength and results. The majority of Americans now self-identify as pro-life. Most Americans now believe in strict regulations of abortions, even those who call themselves pro-choice. Eighty percent of millennials believe abortion should be banned after twenty weeks. More than 300 pro-life laws have been passed in state legislatures over the past few years, that’s more than in the previous decade combined. Abortion clinics are closing in droves and the numbers of abortions are drastically and dramatically down. These laws have had the effect of bringing the U.S. abortion rate to lowest level since 1973. The pro-life movement in America is the motivation and inspiration of pro-life movements around the world. From the notion that abortion was settled, to abortion being one of the most unsettled political issues of all time is a stunning achievement ...
