b. The disciples were discussing the events of the past few day when a stranger asks them what they are discussing.
c "their eyes were kept from recognizing him."
d. Jesus rebukes them for their unbelief and then gives them an Old Testament Bible Study on the prophecies about the Messiah.
e. The disciples invite the stranger to join them for the evening meal.
f. When Jesus breaks the bread "their eyes were opened and they recognized him in the breaking of the bread."
g. Jesus immediately vanishes.
h. Cleopas and the other disciple hasten back to Jerusalem to carry the news to the other disciples, an learn that Jesus has also appeared to them.

"The Lord draws near in order to journey with them"

Verses 13-15: Jesus is taken for another pilgrim returning home from the Jerusalem festival (Passover)

The two disciples were traveling away from Jerusalem on "that very day", the day of the Resurrection of Jesus. The two disciples were traveling away from Jerusalem because the Passover Festival was complete. The two disciples were conversing about all that had "occurred" - the death of Jesus, the empty tomb, the Women proclaiming that they had seen the Risen Lord, Peter and John's Proclamation that the Lord is Risen. While they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them.

"The Lord progressively reveals Himself"

Verses 16-25: The two disciples do not recognize Jesus
Their eyes are "held back" - an expression for spiritual blindness. Jesus looked different - His body has been transformed by the Resurrection - it takes faith, a gift of new eyes, to recognize the risen Lord. Recognizing the Lord does not depend on natural visibility. Jesus can only be known through the right understanding of the Scripture and through participation in the Eucharist..

"The disciples are downcast and confused"

They are confused because they are traveling away from the spiritual center (Jerusalem) to their old way of life(Emmaus).
The disciples do not understand all that has happened the past days. They knew what they had seen - a prophet mighty in word and deed. They knew what they were hoping for - that He would be the redeemer of Israel. They don't know what to make of His violent death.

Jesus does not disclose His identity

Until they describe how they found His tomb empty but "Him they did not see." That is how it is with us - Unless Jesus reveals Himself we would see only an empty tomb and a meaningless death.

Jesus makes Himself know at Emmaus

Verses 26-32: Jesus the Teacher of Scripture and feeds His disciples .
Jesus interprets "all the Scriptures" as referring to Him - See Acts 2: 14-28; 1Peter 1: 17-21. After opening the Scriptures He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples - Every Eucharistic celebration is a celebration of the Emmaus Easter Sunday. Jesus reveals Himself to us in our journey of Life and He speaks to our hearts in the Scriptures and at the breaking of the bread.

Proclamation

Verses 33-35
For Cleopas and the other disciple the journey was a retune to the true way of discipleship. Jesus seeks those who have abandoned the redemptive way of the Suffering Servant. Our heart must burn with the Love of Jesus. We must return to Peter and the Church and proclaim that the LORD IS RISEN!
