Reflection of Father Moreno's Homily: July 31, 2011

Image
Before starting his homily Father Moreno gave the congregation permission to fan themselves with the Parish Bulletins, if they got one Mass. He said since it was so humid they would not be offending him. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to fill us with a full breeze of coolness to refresh us. He was a tough guy, raw hide, no one messed with him. He had escaped from prison. He was Cool Hand Luke in the movie played by Paul Newman. Father Moreno made up this scene where Cool Hand Luke sees a little Catholic church; he goes inside and kneels, there is a cross. Cool Hand Luke asks God three (3) questions: Old Man, Cool Hand Luke calls God “Old Man” because he probably called his own father “Old Man” 1) Old Man, what do you want from me? 2) Old Man, why did you make me? 3) Old Man, why am I here? Cool Hand Luke had a personal relationship with God because he spoke bluntly with God and confronted reality. Jesus had a personal relationship with His Father because He co

Father Bob Hogan: Final Vows to the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple

Image
Dear friends in charismatic renewal: I have been blessed to have been involved in charismatic renewal since I was 17. I am also blessed by my vocations to religious life and the priesthood. As   many of you know, five years ago I received permission from the Vatican to move from the Society of Mary to the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple. I then had to wait the 5 years the Archdiocese of San Antonio expects before being accepted as a priest in this archdiocese. This happened during Holy Week this year. I am now able to   take my final vows as a Brother of the Beloved Disciple. You are invited to this ceremony:   WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2011 AT ST. MARY MAGDALEN CHURCH   6:40 PM: SONG AND PRAISE; 7:00 PM: MASS; RECEPTION IN HALL   AFTERWARDS   Since the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple is a charismatic religious community, we invite you to come and share with us the grace of charismatic renewal in the Church. In my homily I will be speaking about how the grace of charismatic ren

July 29: Feast of St. Martha

Image
Prayer: Saint Martha, pray for us that we might serve Jesus better. Help us to overcome our distractions and worries to listen to his words and be present to him this day. Amen                   In Her Footsteps Dorothy Day said: "If everyone were holy and handsome, it would be easy to see Christ in everyone.   But it was not Christ's way for himself.   Ask honestly what you would do when a beggar asked at your house for food. Would you give it on an old cracked plate, thinking that was good enough? Do you think that Martha and Mary thought that the old and chipped dish was good enough for their guest? It is not a duty to help Christ -- it is a privilege." In what ways do you serve Christ others grudgingly or sparingly? How can you serve them the way Martha served Christ, putting her whole self into it? Access: St. Martha

Knights of Columbus Bible Study – Tuesday 7:00 p.m. KC Hall Hwy 90 - The Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic – Acts of the Apostles

Presenter:   Fr. Antonio O. Moreno Opening Prayer:   Psalm 1 – True happiness in God’s Law Week 1:   Introduction – What is Acts and by whom? Theme: God’s guidance of the Christian Way Acts of the Apostles – Introduction The Acts of the Apostles is the only book in the New Testament which continues the story of Jesus into the early church.   St. Luke is writing not as some kind of “pure historian,” but as a   Pastoral leader to provide his Christian readers with models to follow.   His account is a faith account, full of belief in God’s action within the events he narrates.   It tries to edify or build up the readers’ faith as well.   In fact, one could describe Acts as a presentation of the Christian way of following Jesus, as seen in the lives of the earliest Christians . Traditions from the early church identify the author of Acts with St. Luke.   The Gospel of St. Luke and Acts of the Apostles were written in the eighties or nineties A.D., some twenty to thirty years after th

July 29: Feast of St. Martha

Image
A Prayer to St. Martha O blessed St. Martha, your faith led Jesus to proclaim, “I am the resurrection and the life”; and faith let you see beyond his humanity when you cried out, “Lord I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” With firm hope you said, “I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him”, and Jesus called your brother Lazarus back from the dead.  With pure love for Jesus you welcomed him into your home.   Friend and servant of our Saviour, I too am “troubled about many things”.   (mention your intentions)   Pray for me that I may grow in faith, hope and love, and that Jesus, who sat at your table, will hear me and grant me a place at the banquet of eternal life. Amen. Saint Martha, pray for us that we might serve Jesus better. Help us to overcome our distractions and worries to listen to His words and be present to Him this day. Amen.

(Received in email) I was told a story about a lady in the hospital who was near death when an area Chaplain came to visit her. This Chaplain was a very young female with long blond hair. She listened to the lady who was ill and left her a small gift for comfort.  It was a tiny ceramic frog. The next day one of the people from the lady's church came to visit. The lady told her friend about the beautiful young Chaplain who had come to visit her. The friend was so impressed with the way the lady had improved and felt the need to talk to the young Chaplain. In her search to find the young gal, she was repeatedly reassured that the chaplains are never very young and that there was never a gal that fit the description given. Upon returning to the lady in the hospital, a visiting nurse entered the room and noticed the ceramic frog. The nurse made the comment 'I see you have a guardian angel with you.' As she held the little frog
