Archbishop Gomez joins the Bishops of the United States, encouraging a second collection to aid Haiti

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I ask each of you to keep the suffering victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti in your prayers.

It is feared that thousands may have lost their lives and some estimate that one-third of the population of 9.7 million people may need assistance.

In this dark hour, we must show our love and solidarity with the people of Haiti.

I encourage our pastors throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio to take up a second collection to help provide the very basics of life and restore hope to those whose lives have been broken by this terrible disaster.

United in faith, we will collaborate with the USCCB and Catholic Relief Services in order to ease the suffering in Haiti and help our brothers and sisters to feel the presence of a loving and compassionate God even in the sadness that surrounds them.

Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers, especially as we come together for Mass this weekend.

Sincerely in Christ,

Archbishop José H. Gomez, S.T.D.
