21 Things St.  Louis de Montfort Said About the Rosary and Marian Devotion April 28, 2016 marked the 300 th  anniversary of the death of St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, one of the most important promoters of Marian devotion, the Rosary, and consecration to Our Lady as a sure means of growing in grace and in love for Jesus her Son and our Lord. It was de Montfort’s method of consecration to Our Lady that St. John Paul II made and led to his motto:  Totus Tuus . In  Crossing the Threshold of Hope,  St. John Paul II wrote, “Thanks to St. Louis de Montfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric, indeed, it is very profoundly rooted in the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption." On this  tercentenary  of St. Louis de Montfort, his  writings and teachings  remain ever fresh and inspiring. Let’s look at 21 of them from his works  T...

April 29, 2016: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * May 5 - National Day of Prayer

Image
Letter to the Editor, May 5 - National Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance celebrated by Americans of various faiths. On this special day of observance people are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation. The National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for our nation. This day was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 2008, the Freedom from Religion Foundation sued to challenge the designation of a National Day of Prayer. In 2010, a federal judge ruled that the statute establishing the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional as it is "an inherently religious exercise that serves no secular function." A three judge panel of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned that decision. Every President since 1952 has signed a Nat...

This statue of Mary was untouched by the devastating Ecuador earthquake on April 16, 2016

Image
( EWTN News/CNA ) Everything collapsed around it, but the glass case with the statue of our Lady of Light remained intact after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Ecuador on April 16. The statue was housed at the Leonie Aviat school in the Tarqui administrative district in Manta Canton, Ecuador, one of the areas most strongly affected by the earthquake. Sister Patricia Esperanza, a member of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales community in Guayaquil, said that the school run by her congregation was reduced to rubble. But while the entire school collapsed, the glass case of the Virgin – who is patroness of the Oblates – was completely unharmed.  The sisters cannot get over their amazement, she said.  Sister María del Carmen Gómez of the community in Manta, said that on Wednesday they began demolition work, and that is when they discovered the statue. “Not only did the Virgin remain intact in its grotto, but also my Jesus in the Blessed ...

April 24, 2016: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letters to the Editor * Drop the devices and smell the flowers

Letter to the Editor, Drop the devices and smell the flowers It is a bright and beautiful day outside. You can feel the warmth of the sun beaming its glorious rays and you can feel the brilliance of life all around you. The kind of day that makes you feel so alive and alert; full of joy and exuberance, a day when you are glad and ever so thankful to be alive. Everything seems so perfect and there appears to be nothing wrong in the whole wide world. You sing: “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay! The hills are alive with the sound of music.” Being outside is reinvigorating; breathing fresh air, not artificial air; feeling real warmth, not artificial heat; seeing real light, not artificial glaring light bulbs. Mother Nature is nurturing. The splash of radiant, vibrant colors explodes unlike anything coming across our screened devices. Life up close and personal not filtered through a screen. Real life is not a “reality show”...

Father Hunt spoke about A Catholic Man in a Modern World . Father Hunt grew up in Bracketville near the Mexican border, working on a ranch.  Wanting to help people see, he worked towards becoming an optometrist. But God drew him towards the possibility of religious life. He lived as a missionary for seven years in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Rome, and the Philippines. Now a priest, he considers the authority to forgive sins as the greatest grace of his vocation, and his favorite prayer is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Father Hunt is widely known as “The Biker Priest.” He says, “I grew up as a cowboy, but I also like to ride the ‘steel horse.’” He currently serves as pastor of St. Joseph Church in Del Rio.

Letter to the Editor, Segment of talk show “Walk the Talk” You’ve heard of the women from “The Talk”; well this is a segment from the women of “Walk the Talk”. Christianna: Can you believe that the President has so far commuted the sentences of 248 federal prisoners? That’s more than the last six presidents combined: George W. Bush (11), Bill Clinton (61), George H. W. Bush (3), Ronald Reagan (13), Jimmy Carter (29), and Gerald Ford (22) which totals 139. Mercy: The President has commuted the sentences of 33 criminals convicted of firearm-related offenses while simultaneously pushing for more gun control. These convictions include possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; possession of a firearm by a felon; and the use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. Prudence: These commutations come during the time of the President’s newly proposed  executive actions  on re...
