Letter to the Editor, Christmas in our Heart and Soul Every day is Christmas in the heart and soul of all who believe in Jesus Christ. Christmas is not just one day every year, it is every day of the year for all who believe that Jesus Christ came to save us from our sins and show us the way to Our Father in Heaven. Christmas is not just for a season, it is a reason to believe always and forever. Christmas is all around us every day of the year, if only we have eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart and soul filled with faith to believe in the Christmas Miracle. Christmas is about giving; Jesus giving Himself to us and us giving ourselves to Him and to others. The Christmas season is filled with all the love and generosity of spirit that marks any celebration centered on our Savior Jesus Christ; because giving is actually receiving. It’s time we got back in touch with the truth about the real relationship between giving and receiving whi

December 18, 2016: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Proper burial for babies aborted in Texas

Image
Letter to the Editor, Proper burial for babies aborted in Texas Starting December 19, Texas abortion facilities will no longer be allowed to throw aborted babies' bodies in landfills or down the garbage disposal. Instead, they will be required to bury or cremate them.   The Texas Department of Health and Human Services proposed the rules in July. They were finalized November 28. The rules will apply to hospitals and abortion centers but not to women who carry out chemical abortions in their homes. The rules will also not apply to babies miscarried at home. Several of the Center for Medical Progress's groundbreaking undercover investigative videos exposing Planned Parenthood brazenly trafficking in fetal body parts involved Texas abortionists. In one video, Dr. Amna Dermish, a Planned Parenthood late-term abortionist in Austin, said that the goal of harvesting intact fetal heads will "give me something to strive for." In another, Planned

Letter to the Editor, Education Secretary: School choice advocate President-elect Donald Trump has chosen education advocate Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary. “Betsy DeVos is a brilliant and passionate education advocate,” said Trump in a statement. “Under her leadership we will reform the U.S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families". DeVos said, “I am honored to accept this responsibility to work with the President-elect on his vision to make American education great again. The status quo in education is not acceptable. Together, we can work to make transformational change that ensures every student in America has the opportunity to fulfill his or her highest potential.” The Trump statement notes that DeVos is chairwoman of the American Federation for Children, whose mission is to “improve our nation’s K-12 education by advancing syste

Letter to the Editor,   How Christmas celebrations returned to Cuba Recalling Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cuba in January 1998, Joaquín Navarro-Valls, who was Pope John Paul II’s spokesman and Director of the Holy See Press Office, shared this in an interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Stampa Navarro-Valls revealed that John Paul II had been sending delegates to Cuba for a decade. The Pope was eager to visit the island but he still hadn’t received an invitation. Finally, in November 1996, Castro came to Rome for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) meeting; he was received in the Vatican and formally invited the Pope. Navarro-Valls explained how they prepared for the visit: “We worked for the whole of 1997 to organize it. Three months prior to the visit, in October that year, Navarro-Valls went to Havana and met Castro. It was a long six hour meeting that ended at around three in the morning”. Navarro-Valls explained t

Letter to the Editor, Bye-bye celebrity culture The majority of Americans are slightly aware of the vast conglomerate of celebrities, and not in tune with the media exposure and exploitation of the celebrity culture. Americans are just too busy living their own day-to-day life that they do not care what celebrities have to say about anything. These same celebrities accuse President-elect Donald Trump of being arrogant, egotistical, narcissistic and self-absorbed, but that is the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. These celebrities stated that they would leave the country if Trump was elected President, well good riddance. Did they actually believe that by threatening to leave the United States, the American electorate would think to themselves, “Oh, let’s not vote for Trump so that these celebrities can stay in the United States and not move elsewhere”? Good bye, Amy Schumer, actress and comedian, who said she would be moving to Spai

Vatican: Next Three World Youth Days Will Have Marian Themes

The 2017 and 2018 diocesan-level events as well as the international gathering in 2019 will all be taken from Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Luke. The Vatican announced the themes for the next three World Youth Days, which are focused on Mary and form the basis of a spiritual journey culminating in the next global encounter in Panama in 2019. A Vatican communiqué revealed that the themes for 2017 and 2018 diocesan-level events as well as the international gathering in 2019 will all be taken from Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Luke, centering on Mary in the scene of the Annunciation and her Magnificat, spoken after her cousin Elizabeth’s declaration, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” The theme for the 2017 gathering will be: “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name,” taken from Luke 1:49, while the theme for the 2018 encounter is: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God,” which Gabriel the Archangel

Letter to the Editor, Attitude of Gratitude Mrs. Brown and Sra. Blanco greet each other. Mrs. Brown: Happy Thanksgiving! Sra. Blanco: ¡ Feliz día de acción de gracias! They sit in their usual park bench in picturesque Greenwood Park across from where they reside in The Roswell Apartments. Mrs. Brown turns to Sra. Blanco and asks, “Did you know that gratitude is called the rarest flower in the garden of virtues?”  Sra. Blanco replies: Yes, gratitude is the response of those who humbly and readily acknowledge the good that others have done for them. Mrs. Brown: And gratitude protects us from thinking that the world always owes us something.   Because not having to struggle for daily survival can pave the path to presumption.  Sra. Blanco: That’s right because if we have everything we need and want today; why not also tomorrow, and the day after and throughout our life?            Mrs. Brown: A cocoon of living in our comfort zone

November 16, 2016: Del Rio News-Herald * OPINION * Letter to the Editor * Masquerade memory

Image
Letter to the Editor, Masquerade Memory The annual Riverville Masquerade Ball at the Centro Civico was held on the Saturday before Halloween so the parents could enjoy their treat before their kids enjoyed their treats. It was a formal attire event, costumes were optional, but masks were mandatory. If the guest’s costume did not include a mask, then a small mask covering was gratuitously provided. It was a most elegant affair with the Big Band Orchestra coming all the way from Saint Anthony, playing a wide variety of dance tunes from Ballroom and Boleros to Country and Cumbias and everything in-between to please everyone’s particular dance tastes. Francisco and Fatima had both won free tickets to the Masquerade Ball and were sitting at the VIP table that was providing complimentary champagne and hors d'oeuvres throughout the night. Francisco quickly identified Fatima as Victoria from the musical “Cats” and she was amazed

Ponder this! All praise to God, our Life! by Cami Murphy

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Yesterday I was richly blessed to give my pro-life testimony at 2 Masses, and it was one of the greatest spiritual blessings that I have received in years. Thanks be to God! I want to thank all who were praying for me before and during the Masses. I felt the "peace that passeth all understanding" throughout the day, most profoundly during my testimony. Fr. Cesar, the celebrating priest, said before I spoke that my testimony contained the teachings of the Church, as I understood them from my life experiences. I felt the most profound experience of the Holy Spirit that I have ever felt. On the way to the first Mass, I was filled with this immense gratitude. It seemed like it must be filling the whole sky, and I believe that it was the gratitude of God Our Father, Jesus our Savior, and the Holy Spirit our Life, the gratitude of Our Blessed Mother, and the gratitude of all the saints and angels, for the testimony that I would give,

Letter to the Editor Published in the Kinney County Post

Letter to the Editor  Published in the Kinney County Post The truth is that the only people who "benefit" from abortion are those who are providing abortions.  They are making millions through the legal killing of unborn babies, which results in the stripping of the dignity of their mothers.  Women do not need the "reproductive rights" that the Democratic party so proudly proclaim.  They need loving support and laws that protect the lives of their babies and the dignity of the mothers. In the upcoming presidential election I am  choosing  the protection of our unborn babies and the dignity of their mothers.  I am going to vote for the candidate who has promised to appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court.  I am going to vote for the candidate who has been chosen by the strongly pro-life Republican Party: Donald Trump.  The fact that I don't personally like the man will not stop me from voting for him: for the sake of the bab
